Urvil’s 23-Ball Blitz Answers Inglis Carnage as CSK Sneak Home in a Chepauk Run Fest

Two players. Two powerplay explosions. One result. Chennai Super Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants in one of the most entertaining matches of IPL 2026 at Chepauk, chasing down 204 in 19.2 overs thanks to Urvil Patel’s breathtaking 65 off just 23 balls. Josh Inglis had given LSG every reason to believe with a 33-ball 85 that threatened to take the game completely away, but Jamie Overton’s key triple-strike and a couple of dropped catches at the worst possible time sealed LSG’s fate. CSK win by 5 wickets and LSG are now officially out of the playoff race.

LSG Innings: Inglis Goes Berserk, Middle Order Lets Them Down

For the first six overs, Josh Inglis was playing a different sport to everyone else on that ground. He reached his fifty in just 17 balls, the fastest half-century ever at Chepauk at that point. By the end of the powerplay he was already on 77 off 25 balls and LSG were flying at 91/1.

His pull shots behind the wicket off Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary were outrageous. The scoop was working. The big hits down the ground were landing in the stands. It was the kind of powerplay innings that wins matches before the opposition even has a chance to think.

Then the 10th over happened. Inglis tried the scoop once too often and tickled a catch behind to Sanju Samson for 85. From 112/2 in nine overs, LSG collapsed to 130/5 in the 13th. Boundaries dried up completely. Running between wickets cost them. The momentum that Inglis had built vanished in a handful of overs.

Shahbaz Ahmed saved LSG from something really embarrassing. Coming in at number eight, he took 9 off his first 10 balls and then suddenly unlocked himself with a six off Mukesh. He hit 16 runs in four balls off Overton in the 18th over and finished with 43 off 25 to push the total past 200. It was only the third time LSG had a fifty-plus stand for the seventh wicket or lower. Without it, 180 was more likely.

CSK Innings: Urvil Takes Over

CSK’s reply started with Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad combining well in the powerplay, reaching 97/1 in six overs. Samson fell trying one shot too many off Digvesh Rathi after the CSK captain brought him on in the third over. At that point, Urvil Patel walked in and the match changed completely.

Three consecutive sixes off Avesh Khan. A 25-run over off Rathi including a hat-trick of numbing leg-side hits. In 23 balls he had 65 and the chase suddenly looked like a training session. Gaikwad was content to play second fiddle throughout Urvil’s assault, finishing with 42 off 28 at the other end.

Then came the wobble. Urvil fell and suddenly CSK needed 35 off 23 with wickets in hand. Two quiet Rathi overs squeezed them and when Brevis and Kartik went in quick succession, the ground went a little tense. LSG had a sniff.

The Turning Point: Dropped Catches and Prashant Veer

Dropped catches have haunted LSG all season and it cost them again at the worst possible moment. In the penultimate over, Impact Player Prashant Veer was dropped twice on consecutive deliveries. Two balls later, a six tilted the balance firmly back in CSK’s favour. Shivam Dube sealed it with twin sixes in the final overs and CSK crossed the line.

Brief Scores

LSG 203/8 in 20 overs (Inglis 85 off 33, Shahbaz 43 off 25; Overton 3/36, Kamboj 2/47) CSK 208/5 in 19.2 overs (Urvil 65 off 23, Gaikwad 42 off 28; Shahbaz 2/30, Rathi 2/45)

Where Both Teams Stand Now

This win pushes CSK to fifth on the IPL 2026 points table and moves Rajasthan Royals down one slot. Importantly CSK now have a healthier NRR which matters enormously in a congested table. It is also only their second time chasing down a 180-plus target since 2019, which shows just how much their batting confidence has grown through this campaign.

For LSG, this is their eighth defeat and their playoff chances are officially over. A deflated Pant post-match summed up the situation perfectly.

Both sides meet again in five days, this time in Lucknow. The CSK squad and fixtures page has their upcoming schedule and the LSG squad and fixtures page covers their remaining games.
